INSTITUTE TRAINING PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

The Institute provides training programs which implement new Federal Regulatory requirements of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Federal agency responsible for regulating long term care providers in the United States. The Palliative Care Training content meets the new requirements to treat pain as the "fifth vital sign" and train all level of staff to implement these requirements of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO).

Observing and Reporting Pain Training Session

A one hour on-site training session that takes caregivers through the process of reviewing signs of pain, practicing observing and reporting pain, and providing them with the skills that will allow them to comfort people's pain using alternative therapies. This program is appropriate for nursing and non-nursing staff of Continuing Care, Long-term Care and Assisted Living facilities. ($250, plus travel expenses 50 miles beyond the Washington-Baltimore Metro Area).

Palliative Care Training Program

The Palliative Care Training program provides a total of six hours of classroom training. The program implements a case study method and a 5-POINT Guide to communications that teach care team members how to look for physical (pain and other symptoms), psycho-social and spiritual needs of patients and families. The training provides information based on clinical research and uses a variety of tables and other materials which provide trainees with on-going reference in identifying and reporting problems. The program emphasizes communication skills and teaches caregivers how to organize their observations and how to orally report these in a concise, systematic and consistent way that provides the information needed for nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary care team to follow up with assessment and care.
