MISSION STATEMENT
- To improve the knowledge and skills of caregivers in providing hands-on care and in assisting health professionals in pain management and palliative care;
- To enable caregivers, family members, and individuals approaching the end of life with the necessary tools and information to prepare for the emotional, physical, social, and spiritual components of end of life care.
- To improve public knowledge about and access to quality palliative and end-of-life care.
The Institute for Palliative and Hospice Training, Alexandria, VA., offers training in quality of life and palliative care for paraprofessional and professional members of health care teams. The Institute's training programs incorporate recent research in pain and symptom management. The training model implements a person-centered approach to care that enables caregivers to assist people to improve their functioning and respond to the individual's own assessment of care needs and quality of life.
The philosophy of the training method is to teach caregivers to learn from each experience of caregiving how to identify and work with the individual needs and problems of residents and families as a process of daily caregiving activities. The training programs provide a variety of tables and other materials for quick reference in identifying and reporting problems. The training method emphasizes affective and communciation skills. Caregivers practice how to organize their observations and how to orally report these in a concise, systematic and consistent way that provides the information needed for nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary care team to follow up with assessment and care.
