ABOUT USThe Institute for Palliative & Hospice Training, Inc., Alexandria, VA., was established in 2000 to promote and implement training in palliative care for paraprofessional, volunteer, and family caregivers of people with cancer and other chronic or terminal illnesses. The Institute received 501(c)3 status as a not-for-profit education and research organization, EIN: 54-2003005, in February 2001. The Institute's officers are: Mary Hamil Parker, Ph.D., President; William P. Harris, Treasurer and Harriet M. Epstein, Secretary, Board Members: Molly Schuchat, Ph.D. and Cynthia Nothom. Mary Hamil Parker, Ph.D., has been President of the Institute since 2001. She was the Principal Investigator of a study under a grant from the Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation to evaluate the Palliative Care Training program to train paraprofessionals and other staff to observe and report physical, psychosocial, social and spiritual needs of residents in eleven New York City nursing facilities. From February 2001-February 2002, Dr. Parker represented the Institute on the Assisted Living Workgroup which formulated recommendations to the U.S. Senate Committee on Aging. She has been a member of the Quality of Care Coalition of the National Citizens for Nursing Home Reform (NCCNHR), since 1990. The Institute's Director of Training, Barbara J. Murphy, RN MN AOCN, is certified as a trainer for the ELNEC, end of life training program for clinical staff, the Palliative Care Nursing Certification and the Palliative Care Nursing Assistant Certification programs of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA). The Institute is a Core Partner of the Last Acts Partnership for end of life care. The Institute is a Participating Member of the International Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (IAHSA). Dr. Parker made a presentation about the Institute's Palliative Care Training program at the 2003 IAHSA Conference in Sydney, Australia.
